On Thursday, September 15th, Representative Kay Khan will be speaking and presenting awards with Senator Pat Jehlen at the Paul Kahn Awards for Personal care attendant service at the State House in Nurses Hall. This event highlights the important relationship between consumer/employers and PCAs. Bringing consumers and PCAs together is a major part of the work of Elenore Parker and Jeff Keilson of Rewarding Work Resources Inc, who initiated the idea of an award for PCA service. This month marks the second anniversary of the launch of the Council’s innovative, web based directory for finding and hiring PCAs (www.mass.gov/findpca). The directory, developed and managed by Rewarding Work, has a database of more than 7,000 names and has been used by more than 1,000 consumer/employers. These awards are named in honor of Paul Kahn, a long time PCA employer and advocate who died in January 2010. Having personal care attendants gave Paul the freedom to live on his own terms. It allowed him to pursue his art, writing, teaching and advocacy activities. Without PCAs Paul would have remained institutionalized and would not have made his many contributions to the disability and independent living communities. This award, in his name, honors all of the PCAs who do this important work.
